چکیده

Spacecraft investigations during the last ten years have vastly improved our knowledge about dust in the Jovian system. All Galilean satellites, and probably all smaller satellites as well, are sources of dust in the Jovian system. In-situ measurements with the dust detectors on board the Ulysses and Galileo spacecraft have for the first time demonstrated the electromagnetic interaction of charged dust grains with the interplanetary magnetic field and with a planetary magnetosphere. Jupiter’s magnetosphere acts as a giant mass-velocity spectrometer for charged 10-nanometer dust grains. These dust grains are released from Jupiter’s moon Io with typical rate of∼ 1kg s−1. The dust streams probe the plasma conditions in the Io plasma torus and can be used as a potential monitor of Io’s volcanic plume activity. The other Galilean satellites are surrounded by tenuous impact-generated clouds of mostly sub-micrometer ejecta grains. Galileo measurements have demonstrated that impact-ejecta derived from hypervelocity impacts onto satellites are the major – if not the only – constituent of dusty planetary rings. We review the in-situ dust measurements at Jupiter and give an update of most recent results.

A primordial origin of the Laplace relation among the Galilean satellites.

Understanding the origin of the orbital resonances of the Galilean satellites of Jupiter will constrain the longevity of the extensive volcanism on Io, may explain a liquid ocean on Europa, and may guide studies of the dissipative properties of stars and Jupiter-like planets. The differential migration of the newly formed Galilean satellites due to interactions with a circumjovian disk can lead...

Study of USNO photographic plates of the Galilean satellites

About 500 photographic plates of the Galilean satellites made with the 26-inch refractor of USNO in Washington DC from 1967 to 1998 were digitized and reduced using the UCAC2 star catalog. Results on the ephemerides of the Galilean satellites and on the determination of the mass of Amalthea will be presented. An evaluation of the accuracy of several ephemerides of Jupiter on the 1967-1998 perio...

Visible Spectral Reflectance Measurements of the Galilean Satellites of Jupiter

New spectral reflectance measurements of the Galilean satellites of' Jupiter were obtained in November, 1975 at the 224 cm. telescope at Mauna Kea Observatory, Hawaii. A prism spectrograph with a silicon vidicon detector was used in the spectral region 0.3-1.06 pm. These new measurements are of a higher wavelength resolution than previous measurements. The results are compared with earlier meas...

The Galilean Moons and the Nature of their Magnetic Fields

The Galileo spacecraft’s magnetometer data allowed for an understanding of the Galilean satellites’ internal magnetic fields. My objective was to learn the nature of these fields and see if they are consistent with geological and observational data by reviewing all relevant papers and seeking parallels or inconsistencies between them. The results show that Europa and Callisto have internal brin...

New accurate ephemerides for the Galilean satellites of Jupiter I. Numerical integration of elaborated equations of motion

We present a new theory of the four Galilean satellites Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. This theory aims to deliver highly accurate ephemerides able to represent the Galilean satellites’ motion over several centuries. It is based on the numerical integration of elaborated equations of motion. This first paper describes and tests many usually neglected perturbations. We are then able to retai...
